A strategy for this skill

  • A zero exponent means the value is 1: a0 = 1 when a is not 0.
  • A negative exponent means reciprocal: a-1 = 1a.
  • Decimal reciprocals can be quick: 0.5-1 = 2, 0.25-1 = 4, and 0.1-1 = 10.
  • An exponent of -0.5 means reciprocal square root: a-0.5 = 1√a for positive perfect squares.
  • A whole-number coefficient can sometimes be rewritten as a power of the same base, such as 81 = 34.
  • With the same base, multiplication adds exponents and division subtracts exponents.
  • When two squared values are divided, compare the bases first: a2 ÷ b2 = (a ÷ b)2.

A separate practice example
Follow the strategy here. This example has its own information and answer.

Evaluate: 12 + 56 ÷ 23.
  1. Evaluate the exponent first: 23 = 8.
  2. Then divide before adding: 56 ÷ 8 = 7.
  3. Finally add 12 + 7 = 19.

Answer to this example only: 19
